With violent crime increasing in Jacksonville, efforts are underway to bridge the gap between law enforcement and at-risk young men in Duval County high schools. Dozens of young men from eight different high schools across the county packed inside the Hyatt Regency Hotel downtown on Friday.  Three hundred young men were chosen to participate in the Save Our Sons Summit, where JSO officers and city leaders worked with at-risk youth, hoping to steer them on a good path.  Nyaire Graves lives on the Westside and was one of the 300 at the summit. He said he has seen a lot of violence in his lifetime.  “We lost students this year,” Graves said. “You’ve got people walking around school crying. They’re holding assemblies.”  Graves participated in several discussions with JSO. He said he appreciated the honest conversation.  “Most of the people here are from the hood, too.” Graves said. “They made their way out. They’re trying to show us the same way.“  Bishop John Guns said Friday’s event is just the first step to help curb the violence in Jacksonville.  He is a part of the drive behind the annual summit.  “We will be going into each of the schools every month to directly engage this group of young men.,“ Guns said. “Helping them to find the right path, the path for their future, so this year’s theme ’What’s Next?' And the goal is to motivate them to go after the right thing.“  As for Graves, he said he’s studying for his ACT’s and plans to head to college when he graduates.  “Do my dream.” Graves said. “I don’t wanna get caught up in no shenanigans. None of that.”

Neighbors living near NAS Jacksonville on the Westside can expect to hear some extra noise over the next few weeks. That's as the NAS Jax says carrier-based jet fighters and other types of aircraft will be conducting training, starting January 25th through February 15th.  NAS Jax says residents in neighborhoods surrounding the base will notice an increase in aircraft activity and noise as that training is underway. Eisenhower (CVN 69) and embarked Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 8 staff, according to NAS Jax.

Theater lovers are lining up to buy tickets for the Broadway musical, Hamilton. The Times Union Center will begin to sell tickets at 8 a.m. for the Hamilton Jacksonville shows in March. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.fscjartistseries.org beginning at 10 a.m.  The Hamilton crew will be in town from March 17 to March 29. Click here to see the performance schedule.  Action News Jax reporter Alicia Tarancon was live outside the Times Union Center in downtown Jacksonville where Hundreds of Hamilton fans camped outside the Times Union Center for Performing Arts and waited in line for hours to get their hands on tickets to the popular musical.  These fans woke up extra early to secure their spot in line.  'Got here about 5 ’o clock in the morning,' Randi Pannick said.  'I got out a little after 6:00 am,' Shakawn Jones said.  'We probably got out here around 6:15 a.m. and we struggled with parking,' Kayla Chouinard said.  Action News Jax Sky Vision Drone flew over the Time Union Center for the Performing Arts where we saw the line of people wrapped around the building.  Doors opened at 7:30 a.m. but the box office didn’t start selling the first ticket until 8:00 a.m.  The FSCJ Artist Series recently brought two other popular Broadway shows to Jacksonville: Rent and Wicked.  Anastasia is also premiering in April.  Fans told me that they jumped at the chance to go to Hamilton when they heard it was coming to downtown.  “Jacksonville’s been getting some really great shows recently, so I mean so excited,” Rebecca Brownfield said.  “I’m originally from New Jersey and many of my friends went to Hamilton in New York city, so it’s great to be able to see it here,” Jason Gladfelter said.  “This is my first time, so I’m really excited. Maybe would never get the opportunity to see it otherwise,” Candice Hamilton said.  One local mother said she snagged a pair of tickets for her and her daughter.  “It’s a wonderful musical and it’s my daughter’s 12th birthday and she listens to the soundtrack at least once a week, so it’ll be a wonderful present for her,” Jones said.  Action News Jax warned you earlier this week about fake tickets circulating online.  The FSCJ Artist Series told me that they’re the ones organizing the event and the only way to safely buy tickets online is to get them directly through their website.

Popular Southside lunch spot The French Pantry was broken into this week for the second time in three months. Employees arrived at the restaurant early Monday morning and one of them noticed that the side glass door had been smashed out, according to a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office report.  Police and the restaurant manager arrived and saw that the hole in the door was large enough for a person to fit through.  Two cash registers containing $100 each were taken, and officers saw that a bent butter knife had been used to pry open the manager’s office, the report said.  It appeared that the suspect tried to gain entry into a filing cabinet inside the office, as there were footprints on it and the top drawer was damaged.  A ceiling tile that had been pried off by the suspect was found on the ground, the report said.  The manager told police that the restaurant is closed Sundays. Bakers were working at the restaurant until 1:30 p.m., but a cleaning crew was still there.  The manager said the cleaning crew always locks the business when they are done, and they have been cleaning the restaurant for a long time.  In October, the restaurant was burglarized in a similar manner. According to a JSO report, the front door was smashed open and two cash registers containing $100 each were taken.

At least two people died and one person was injured after an early-morning explosion Friday at a machine shop in northwest Houston, police said. KHOU reported residents first felt the blast at Watson Grinding & Manufacturing Co. around 4:30 a.m. Friday. Update 2:30 p.m. EST Jan. 24: Police Chief Art Acevedo said authorities believe they have identified the two people killed in Friday morning’s explosion as employees of Watson Grinding. Authorities declined to identify the victims as they continued to await official confirmation of their identities. “We only have two people that are accounted for and we have recovered two bodies,” Acevedo said Friday afternoon. “That doesn’t mean that there (isn’t) people that no one knows were in the area, and so we cannot say whether or not there are more victims but right now. It appears (to be) a high probability (that) there’s only two victims.” Police, firefighters and officials with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the cause of the blast. “As of right now, we don’t have any have no indication that there’s any terrorism nexus or any intentional act,” Acevedo said. Earlier Friday, he noted investigations are part of standard procedure when dealing with situations such as Friday’s explosion. Update 1:55 p.m. EST Jan. 24: Firefighters have cleared the immediate blast area affected by Friday morning’s explosion at Watson Grinding. The owner of Watson Grinding told KTRK the blast was a propylene gas explosion. Houston fire officials said propylene tanks still at the machine shop were intact and stable Friday afternoon. “There is no indication of any air quality issues,” officials said. Update 1:10 p.m. EST Jan. 24: Police expect to provide an update on the investigation into Friday morning’s explosion at a news conference scheduled to start at 1 p.m. local time Friday. Update 10:55 a.m. EST Jan. 24: Police Chief Art Acevedo told reporters Friday morning that police have confirmed two fatalities connected to the explosion at Watson Grinding. Acevedo said authorities weren’t immediately sure whether the victims were employees of Watson Grinding or residents who lived nearby. Mayor Sylvester Turner said as many as three people are believed to have died as a result of the early-morning blast. Police and firefighters have launched an investigation of the incident. “Let me just say off the bat, we have no reason to believe -- we have no evidence at this point that terrorism was involved, we don’t have any evidence that an intentional act is involved,” Acevedo said, adding that the investigation was part of standard procedure. Officials with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are also investigating. Fire Chief Samuel Peña said there was “significant damage” to homes and businesses in the area. Authorities continue to investigate. Update 10:35 a.m. EST Jan 24: Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said as many as three people are believed to have died in Friday morning’s explosion. Original report: One person was missing Friday after an early-morning explosion at a machine shop in northwest Houston caused heavy damage to nearby buildings, injuring at least one person and leaving rubble scattered in the area. “(The explosion) knocked us all out of our bed, it was so strong,” resident Mark Brady told KPRC. “It busted out every window in our house. It busted everybody’s garage door in around here … and closer toward the explosion over here, it busted people’s roofs in and walls in and we don’t know what it is … It’s a warzone over here.” Police Chief Art Acevedo said Friday morning that one person remained unaccounted for after the incident. “It’s somebody that works there,” Acevedo said. “We’re keeping that person in our prayers.” Firefighters said a resident who lives near Watson Grinding was injured in the explosion and taken to a hospital. Houston fire Capt. Oscar Garcia told CNN the person was injured by shattered glass. At least one local resident captured the incident on a doorbell camera. The owner of Watson Grinding told KTRK the blast was a propylene gas explosion. Houston fire Chief Samuel Peña said a hazardous materials team was monitoring after the incident but that there were no immediate reports of hazardous air quality. Acevedo said the debris field extended about half a mile from the site of the explosion. Check back for updates to this developing story.
